Terms of Reference:

  1. To conduct and coordinate research and development activities on coastal related disaster prevention, mitigation and rehabilitation works.

  2. To work with local professional bodies and governments to provide technical supports and assistance to the planning, coordination and implementation of disaster rehabilitation and disaster mitigation works in the disaster affected regions, and to identify technical problems and potential topics that require more research and development efforts.

  3. To develop pamphlets for public education and documents or design guides for geotechnical works related to coastal disaster prevention, mitigation and rehabilitation, such as pamphlets providing basic information on tsunami and earthquake in different languages, design guides for disaster rehabilitation and mitigation works, conducting hazard mapping, etc.

  4. To coordinate and provide trainings and promote international research collaborations and cooperation through conferences, workshops, short courses, special training sessions, and other activities conducted jointly with local and international communities.

  1. Organising the 2nd International Conference on Geotechnical Engineering for Disaster Mitigation and Rehabilitation (GEDMAR08), Nanjing, China, May 30- June2, 2008, together with TC4 and Hohai University.

  1. Publishing a book on "Geo-disasters in Coastal Areas: Processes, Rehabilitation and Case Histories" by Thomson Learning.  The topics to be covered include:

The book will also form the basis for a State-of-the-Art Report that can be submitted to ISSMGE before the next ISSMGE conference in Alexandria, Egypt, in 2009.

  1. Supporting the International Symposium on New Generation Design Codes for Geotechnical Engineering Practice, Nov. 2-3, 2006, Taipei, Taiwan, which was organised by Taiwan Geotechnical Society and TC23.

  2. Organising a 2-hour Special Session on Geo-hazard Mitigation at the 13th Southeast Asian Geotechnical Conference to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 8-11 May 2007. The Special Session Speakers and their topics are:

  1. Organising a 1.5-hour Special Session on Disaster Mitigation and Management at the 13th Asian Regional Conf on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering 10-14 Dec 2007 at Kolkata, India.

  2. Organising a Special Session on Disaster Prevention Technologies at the Kyushu 2007, 5th International Conference on Earth Reinforcement -New Horizon in Earth Reinforcement, November 14-16 2007 at Fukuoka, Japan.

  3. Supporting the International Conference on Mitigation of the Risk of Natural Hazards to be held in Peradeniya, Sri Lanka on 27-28 March 2007. The Conference is co-organized by International Institute for Infrastructure Renewal and Reconstruction, University of Calgary, Canada and the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka.
